"Entering the Passion of Jesus"

Lent Worship Series

PICTURING OURSELVES IN THE STORY

Inspired by New Testament scholar Amy-Jill Levine's book, Entering the Passion of Jesus, this worship series moves through the last week of Jesus' life over the course of 6 weeks, "freeze-framing" various parts of the Holy Week story so we can dive deep into the narrative–one that has as much relevance for our time and our lives as it did for the disciples who witnessed it first-hand. Every week a work of art from the Vanderbilt School of Theology's digital collection will inspire us to consider what it might have been like to be there. Getting people to Holy Week services can be difficult. This series will help your congregation be touched by the power of love, grace, forgiveness, and heartache that is part of Jesus' story, and ours.

It can be stressful to lead worship week after week and feel like you are doing your best to connect the message with your congregation.

Different people will have different ways they connect with worship. Some will be most moved by the music, some by the spoken word, some will be connected more powerfully by the visual content or ritual action. Connecting all these elements can take worship to a new level for you and your congregation.

When you purchase this worship series you receive resources for every worship art that will get you and your worship team planned ahead for an incredible journey through Lent and Holy Week.

Included resources:

  • Scripts for nine worship experiences
  • Scripts for Children's Time
  • Original theme song music
  • Suggestions and resources for visual, media, dramatic and music arts
  • Sermon Notes
  • Small Group Study Suggestions
  • Individual Reflection Pages
  • Logo artwork
  • Series video trailer

Worship Series Synopsis

The events of Christ’s Passion, which take place during the last week of Jesus’ life, often don’t receive enough time in our worship and study. These stories are important to our faith journey and our identity as followers of Jesus. And yet we often move too quickly from Palm Sunday to Easter Sunday with little time to take in the dramatic story of that last week. Throughout the six weeks of Lent we will “freeze-frame” moments in Holy Week so we might put ourselves in the picture, thereby “Entering the Passion of Jesus.” How might taking a closer look at the ancient story open us to deeper conviction for our role in its ongoing message?

Wondering what is in each script?

Ash Wednesday – Preparing the Canvas: First Steps

Our Lent journey begins with a powerful ritual of letting go in order to prepare the canvas upon which God will create a work of art.

Week 1 — The Parade: Risking Reputation

The first week we focus on Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem, a strategic event that sets the stage for the passion narrative to unfold.

Week 2 — The Temple: Risking Righteous Anger

As Jesus angrily overturns tables in the Temple, we are called to examine whether "business as usual" in our own houses of worship is keeping us from deeper ministry.

Week 3 — The Teaching: Risking Challenge

Jesus’ teachings present a challenge to religious authorities and their interpretations of the law, and show us new wisdom for our lives today.

Week 4 — The First Dinner: Risking Rejection

A woman anoints Jesus with nard in an extravagant act of devotion, prompting a heated debate about expressions of love and community values.

Week 5 — The Last Supper: Risking the Loss of Friends

Jesus' radical act of washing feet sets a new example of love and leadership through service and sacrifice.

Week 6 — The Garden: Risking Temptation

At Gethsemane, Jesus' plea sounds like our own at times–"take this from me"–and yet he shows us the depths that love must go.

Holy Week 1 — First Dinner: Gratitude for Those Who Care for our Community

Inspired by Jesus' mandate to remember the woman who anointed him, this dinner service honors those who are emergency personnel, medical providers, hospice workers, and caregivers for the ways in which they serve those in need.

Holy Week 2 — Last Things: Maundy Thursday/Good Friday

This stational worship experience moves through all the events of Holy Week in which we have lingered and invites us to stay with Jesus through the end... or is it?

Series Inspiration

As I worked with the book that was the inspiration for this series (Amy-Jill Levine’s Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginners Guide to Holy Week), I was struck with how this Jewish New Testament scholar was helping us dive more deeply into each scene, "framing" the moment with the historical and cultural context.

The artwork on the cover of the book inspired me to create a way to incorporate the amazing collection of artwork at the Vanderbilt Lectionary website, which I have enjoyed for many years (special thanks to Anne Richardson, Special Projects Librarian at the Vanderbilt Divinity Library, for her assistance). I was also aware that they had recently added more contemporary works of art (aided by my friend, Dr. Kathy Black) by artists from a diversity of ethnic backgrounds.

I am excited to introduce you to the collection if you do not already know about it. Throughout the season, we will "frame" our own current events and stories so that we might dedicate ourselves again to our work as disciples of Jesus. My prayer is that you and your congregation will learn much from Levine’s resource as well as from your own experience of reframing life along the lines of the Divine Artist.

Peace & Passion,

Dr. Marcia McFee
